What are Shared Medical Appointments?
Shared medical appointments (SMAs) are a unique type of healthcare service where multiple patients with similar health concerns meet at the same time with a healthcare provider. During these group-style appointments, patients have the opportunity to receive individualized care and guidance from the provider while also benefiting from the support and insights of their peers

Here are some key features of SMAs:

Group Setting: Patients with similar conditions or needs come together for a scheduled appointment with a provider.
Individualized Care: While it’s a group setting, each patient still receives personal attention and care tailored to their specific needs.
Peer Support: Patients can share experiences, offer advice, and support one another in a safe, confidential environment. This peer interaction can be especially helpful for chronic conditions like diabetes, weight management, or mental health concerns.
Educational Focus: Providers often use SMAs to educate patients on managing their health conditions, offering group discussions, demonstrations, or informational resources.
Privacy: Even though it’s a group setting, confidentiality is maintained, and sensitive information is handled respectfully.

SMAs are especially popular for conditions that require ongoing management or education, like diabetes, hypertension, chronic pain, or obesity.
